Testosterone Therapy

Testosterone therapy may seem like an enticing option to some aging men. The desired effects of Testosterone therapy; increased strength, muscle mass, performance, energy and a boost in libido can make testosterone therapy seem like a miracle anti-aging therapy. Unfortunately, such results don't come without ridicule. Some point to the fact that there are but a scant few large studies that have been performed to support these results. The truth is that numerous peer reviewed and published studies, conducted at major international universities have examined the effects of testosterone therapy in men and agree that the purported effects are largely positive and the negative effects largely exaggerated, over reported and the side effects largely reversible. Even so, there are potential down sides to testosterone therapy and those include:

  • Acne
  • Enlarged prostate
  • Accelerating existing prostate cancer
  • Reduced sperm production
  • Gynecomastia (growth of breast tissue)
  • Testicular atrophy

All drug therapies carry with them risks. However, by most accounts, testosterone therapy is as close to a direct anti-aging therapy as science has yet discovered.  While the risks of testosterone therapy seem manageable for most users, the alleged benefits of increased libido, virility, performance, energy, muscle mass and decreased body fat, contribute so much to a sense of well-being that the downside is acceptable. Many people agree that testosterone therapy is one of the most transforming therapies to which a man can avail himself, because it addresses several issues vital to men.

Psychological changes:

Low Testosterone in Men can contribute to emotional turmoil. Prior to testosterone therapy, men can experience feelings of sadness or depression. Low testosterone in men can affect his overall sense of well-being. Some men feel unmotivated, have low self confidence, trouble with memory and concentration. Low testosterone in men affects how men regulate emotions and has been shown to contribute to depression. Testosterone therapy can help manage a combination of irritability, decreased sex drive, and fatigue that can come with low testosterone in men.

Physical changes:

The psychological effects of  Low testosterone in men can be a direct result of the physical changes he will experience.  Low testosterone in men can contribute to deleterious physical changes in his body including:

  • Fatigue
  • Loss of muscle mass
  • Increased body fat
  • Loss of body hair
  • Gynecomastia (man boobs)
  • effects on cholesterol metabolism

Libido:

Low testosterone in men is the greatest affront to a man brought on by the passage of time. In men with low testosterone levels, there's a good chance that their sexual desire and performance will be affected. The older a man gets the more he will experience a number of symptoms related to sexual performance where lower testosterone is the purported cause. Older men can experience fewer spontaneous erections, such as the one he normally woke up with throughout his life. Or, none at all. Erectile dysfunction (ED) is not normally considered the culprit of low testosterone in men.  However, in cases where ED accompanies lower testosterone production, testosterone therapy may help with ED.

Infrequent erections and ED will naturally reduce a man's desire for sex. It's a vicious cycle that pulls a man literally down into his grave, eventually. Testosterone is the hormone most responsible for sex drives and high libidos in men and women. Testosterone therapy is, so far, the only therapy that has demonstrated a return of libido, desire, virility, energy, and a favorable body composition associated with low testosterone in men.
